Summons Spring/Summer 2019 | Page 3

Treasurer

Happy spring all, at least I hope it is here.

The WDALA checkbook balance as of 5/29/19 is $12,560.35. The NALA registration and airfare expenses have been paid for Afton and Alice; we still have rooms, meals and taxi/uber expenses to reimburse them upon their return. I know both of them are looking forward to attending.

If you missed the spring seminar, you missed a great time. We learned a lot and reconnected for a day in Minot.

I hope you have a wonderful summer and hope to see each of you at the fall seminar in Bismarck in October.

OFFICERS' REPORTS

Kathy Johnson, CLA

2nd Vice President

Another year has gone by already! It just seems like I was typing up this report and I was telling everyone about our big remodel. The upstairs is almost done. We have to put new flooring in bedrooms and paint them. Last winter we decided to start working on our basement and it is getting to be more of a project than we anticipated. We had paneling half way up on all the walls so we tore that all off and put up new sheetrock. Of course when you do that it means taping and mudding and texturizing. Then all new paint. We have two bedrooms in our basement so had to do those, too. We are putting up new ceiling tiles and lighting and new carpet. I think we should have just built a complete new house!! But if any of you homeowners know, it just never ends with a home! There is always something you want to update.

I am very excited to tell everyone we have added three new members: Anna Heinen, Beth Ripplinger and Jesse Wosick. Our membership is at 49 members total. Welcome again to these new members! I have asked Marcy to attach the Membership Renewal Form for 2019-2020 to The Summons and ask everyone to print it out and get it mailed in by September 1st. I will also be sending an email to the WDALA members sometime in August with the Membership Renewal Form as another reminder to get it filled out and sent to Corrina. You may also bring it to the Fall Seminar on October 1-2, 2019, in Bismarck, ND, at the Heritage Center. Please consider helping out with one of the volunteer positions! This is a great way for our organization to get out there and be recognized by both the legal and public community. It’s also a great way to get to know other members of WDALA.

If anyone needs to contact me or has any questions regarding the membership renewal form, you can email me at [email protected]. Hope to see you all at the Fall Seminar on September 18-19th!!

Nilla Fry

First Vice President

Spring has sprung and summer is hot on its heels! We had a great Spring Seminar in Minot. Attorney Ashleigh B. Ensrud from Pringle & Herigstad spoke to us about Guardianships. Attorney Meredith Childress with the Minot Regional Child Support Unit spoke to us about Recent Amendments to Child Support Guidelines. Thomas M. Dunlap gave an informative presentation on Structured Settlements. We ended the seminar with Dr. Terry Ferebee Eckmann. Dr. Eckmann had us moving and shaking. She also reminded us that as paralegals we need to remember to get up and move, take time to breathe, think about work and life in more positive ways, and find things to be grateful for.

I wear many hats in my office and sometimes feel overwhelmed and not so smart. I am the receptionist, the office supply order person, the Girl Friday, the paralegal, and the secretary. I was recently informed I had not served discovery properly since I did not have written consent to serve the attorney via email. I have been serving discovery via email for YEARS so when I found out I was wrong it sure wasn’t a feeling of greatness. I spent quite a bit of time looking at the rules and with the help of members of this sensational group we came to the conclusion that service has to be done through Odyssey File and Serve unless written consent has previously been given to serve documents via email. I am grateful for the support and knowledge of this group. Thank you!
