The newsletter team has offered to provide me some space in our newsletter to talk about what is happening in the human resources arena at our company. I look forward to discussing the various subjects that I believe have the most effect on the most important asset at Summit – our employees. I plan to use this opportunity to write about a variety of subjects such as educating everyone about our human resources team, how the culture is changing at Summit, important employment law changes that will affect you such as the Affordable Health Care Act to name just a few of the topics I believe are important.
I want to take this opportunity to introduce your Human Resources team. Our mission is to serve as a value-added partner to Summit Utilities Management and Employees through the development and implementation of programs that enhance the work environment while continuing to provide processes that ensure natural gas industry and employment related regulatory compliance. With that mission in mind we focus on developing programs that attract and retain valued employees; provide them recognition and rewards; and continue to develop their technical and leadership skills. To do that the department strives to ensure that all human resource related programs (recruiting, compensation, policy administration, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management and employee development) support the corporate goals and objectives to enhance the work environment.
Jan Huey leads the team as our HR Manager. Jan has been with Summit over 13 years starting as the receptionist in the Pine office in 2001 and progressing to become the manager of the department about six years ago. I am not allowed to say when Jan graduated from college but I can mention that she received her Professional Human Resources certificate a few years ago and is now studying to receive a Senior Professional Human Resources certificate. Jan’s passion for our employees is exemplary as is her desire to provide the best service she can. Jan is a health advocate which she models by running at least three miles a day several days a week. She also loves skiing and spending time camping in the beautiful Colorado mountains with her husband and two teenage girls.
Kim Nelson joined the company in June of 2009 after receiving a degree in Human Resource Management at the University of New Mexico. Kim started her career as an HR Associate and was promoted to HR Generalist in January. Kim started learning the HR business from the ground up by tackling the processing of payroll which she did for three years. She is now becoming more involved in assisting employees with questions about their benefits, managing the staffing process from postings to job offers and some employee relations issues. Kim loves skiing, is a terrific golfer and an avid volleyball player.
Cindy Jones joined the company last June as our first official payroll coordinator. Cindy brought over eight years of experience processing payroll from her last company and has an in-depth knowledge of payroll and the ADP system that we use to process payroll. Cindy is married and cares for a bulldog, a pug and a Boston Terrior. Her extensive knowledge of payroll allows me to sleep more soundly at night!
I have the pleasure of leading this great team. They are dedicated to providing timely, accurate responses to your questions to allow you to concentrate on your daily tasks and not have to spend a lot of time worrying about your paycheck, benefits, etc. Please feel free to contact any of them or me with your human resource related questions. I encourage you to let me know if we ever fail to meet your needs. We can only get better if we know where we aren’t meeting expectations. I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you on the many topics that affect your daily work like in upcoming issues of the newsletter.
