Language Arts / Study Skills Creative Writers: Fun with Words Improve reading skills while writing, as you create an illustrated journal or alphabet book, write a play, poem or song, and more in this project-based class. Singing, movement, and theater games inspire and motivate reading and writing. Grades 1 – 4 Period 1 Session One or Two Tuition $120 Prep for Middle School This three-week course will focus on improving a student’s reading and writing skills. Students will grow as writers and be challenged to analyze different writings. Students will also strengthen and harness their essential math skills, providing them with abilities and confidence for the upcoming year. Grades 5 – 8 1:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Session One or Two Tuition $250 Exploring the World of Gods, Myths, and Monsters Fantasyland: A Writer’s Workshop GPA+ Solutions Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Experience a multimedia overview of creatures found in centuries of literature, art, and film. Students will be introduced to ancient world myths, legends, and fantastic creatures representing diverse cultures and belief systems. Resource materials will contain some scary elements. Grades 3 – 6 Period 3 Session One or Two Tuition $120 Dr. Gerry Lozeau Ph.D. This academic workshop for middle and high school students will be offered daily for two hours during the week of June 8 – 12. Dr. Lozeau has consulted with Sandia Prep since 1989; and this will be the fifth year SummerPrep has hosted his workshop (www.gpaplussolutions.com). A primary focus will be study-reading, moving students from merely reading print to reading to find answers to questions. Students will learn to make notes versus taking notes, the value of pre-reading as a habit, and how to create a study system to better handle challenging material. In addition, students will learn the value of self-testing (which has been presented in recent studies as the most effective learning strategy), while considering why other often-used and time-consuming strategies provide limited positive results. Best practices for students at all levels will be clearly outlined. Students will discover why efficient daily study strategies and habits are excellent test preparation techniques, which eliminate the need to cram for exams. Enhanced learning opportunities and performance for all students will be discussed.
