anything – enter the iPad! Having
already joined the iPad artists
Facebook group and being impressed
by the superb work going on in
the world of iPad art, I was really
inspired and started to investigate
a host of apps available. I‘ve now
settled on some firm favourites that
I find give a very good interpretation
of traditional media - and haven’t
looked back!
I never dreamt that the iPad would
become my favourite way of creating
art, but I love the immediacy of
being able to get out the iPad
and create an oil painting, (most
importantly, one that doesn’t take
weeks to dry!). Strangely, I also feel
it has also improved my ‘traditional’
art skills. Because I am drawing and
painting more, it has developed my
skills and given me the confidence to
try different techniques on paper. I
now find I am looking at things and
asking myself how I would paint or
draw them – both on the iPad and in
traditional media.
“I love the immediacy of

painting...”
The iPad has also broadened my
horizons; spawning an interest in
urban art and painting and drawing
from life (it’s great to sketch urban
scenes and people while pretending
to check email!); while a recent
upgrade to the iPad air from the
2nd generation has also given my
digital art a boost. I now have many
more pixels to play with and, with
Bluetooth 4 technology, the whole
world of pressure-sensitive stylus is
now open to me!
I have also enjoyed becoming part of
a growing community of artists who
are finally starting to have digital art
accepted as ‘real’ art - if you search
online it doesn’t take long to find
excellent work painted on the iPad
and the various groups and forums
ready to welcome fellow artists with
open arms.
Having experienced such a personal
revolution through using iPad for
my artwork, I would like to share
the knowledge I have gained on my
journey - lots of people now have
an iPad ‘permanently connected’ to
them and it’s a great opportunity to
unlock the ‘inner artist’. To this end,
I will be leading a course aimed at
providing a grounding in iPad art and
the hints and tips I have picked up
over the last 18 months of honing
my skills and techniques – and
hopefully inspire you to join this
ever-expanding community.
