Al Shaqab Lockinge Day is the richest day in Newbury’ s year, with prize money topping £ 750,000. As well as the exciting racing action,‘ The Lockinge’ is one of the social highlights of the summer, featuring live music after the racing and the chance to win a holiday to Qatar.
Although still in spring, the fashion at this festival leans more towards summer wardrobes, so opt for floaty dresses but consider your cover-ups carefully to counter chill winds or rain. A tailored jacket over your dress is a good option, or a structured dress with statement sleeves could hide a thermal vest or be softened with a luxuriant cashmere wrap.
It’ s quite a walk from Parade Ring to Finishing Post, so consider your footwear carefully if you like to follow the Circuit Ritual – see page 48. Wedge heels or flats are your friend, although Newbury’ s spectator areas are well paved so you won’ t come unstuck if you prefer to flash your heels.
Hats are not compulsory and most racegoers opt not to wear one. Those who do sport headwear generally aim for a large fascinator, although if you dare to wear, a flamboyant hat is always welcome!
