amously described by King
Edward VII as a “garden
party with racing tacked
on”, this is perhaps one of
the most relaxed of the big
festivals, but that does not mean style is
compromised.
It would be a mistake to think you
could turn up in a creased summer dress
that you have unearthed from the back
of your wardrobe at the last minute. This
‘garden party’ is filled with fashion that
sets out to look understated and effortless,
but it is more the designer version of
‘relaxed’ than the music festival
equivalent. Jodie Kidd once said: “The
fashion is great – very chic and cool.”
If you do go for a high street dress,
make sure your accessories are right up
to speed – sunglasses (a must), handbags
and jewellery should all be handmade
(either by an independent designer or
from a stylish craft fair/market), a little
boho, and definitely not look like you’re
trying too hard.
The Qatar Goodwood Festival is not
particularly elitist in fashion terms, but
you are expected to make an effort to
understand the particular style of this
festival – and that is not cocktail dresses.
Think fresh, chic and floaty. Vintage is
also a winner here.
While not obligatory, ladies are
encouraged to wear hats, but aim for
elegant wide-brimmed straw summer
hats, ladies’ Panama, or understated
pillbox rather than outrageously
eye-catching concoctions (unless you are
competing for the L'Ormarins prize – see
next page). A quirky alternative would be
a knotted wide silk headband or a quality
straw or leather sun visor.
With its views of the sea, Goodwood is
also known for its cooler breezes so look
for a summer cape, fine cashmere poncho
or elegant wrap to accessorise your outfit.
Allow for a scorcher by toting a larger
handbag that has room to contain the
cover-up if the breeze has dropped.
For shoes, beautiful sandals are your
friend – flat, wedge or block-heeled.
Avoid stilettoes – unless you are planning
to aerate the lawns.
Qatar Goodwood Festival runs for the
best part of a week, and the Thursday is
Ladies' Day, celebrated with the Magnolia
Amily Border Print Dress, features
a smattering of blues created by
lace overlay and a blossoming
dip-dye, £169 from Damsel in a
Dress. For all-blue, the Silk Gazar
Obsession Ballerina Dress in
Cinderella Blue is £2,850 from
Suzannah. For a vintage style try
the Alice dress – a ’50s inspired
halter dress in duchess satin, with
a matching spot tulle overlay and a
sweetheart neckline. Made to
order by Louise Rose Couture,
£175 from Etsy.
