he fashion at Royal Ascot
is as famous as the
festival itself. While many
a celebrity will be snapped
in their fabulous outfits,
the general public can take equal
billing here – if you have an equally
stunning outfit.
But take care – the rules of the Dress
Code are almost as famous as the fashion
and any infringement may see you
refused entry to certain enclosures or
areas of the racecourse.
Ladies: most famous of the rules are
the requirement for a hat or substantial
fascinator (with a base of more than
10cm diameter), a knee-length hemline
and shoulder straps of an inch wide
or more.
Men are expected to wear top hats and
black or grey morning dress, but avoid
cravats. Matching suits with shirt and tie
can be worn in areas other than the
Royal Enclosure.

he highlight of the
racing calendar at
Newcastle, the
Northumberland Plate
Festival celebrates its
135th year in 2017. This three-day
festival has first class racing and a
true party atmosphere.
The festival opens with the Betfred
Seaton Delaval Trophy Raceday on
29th June, then 30th June is the
Betfred Gosforth Park Cup Night,
which is a popular evening for groups
of friends. This summer will host
UB40 performing live after racing.
Northumberland Plate Race Day
is 1st July and this year there will be
a Family Enclosure with fairground
rides and a host of activities to
entertain the whole family.
For your outfit? We say take your
favourite feature and flaunt it
fabulously. The ladies up north simply
do not feel the cold, and with their
cheeky sense of fun they absolutely
dare to bare… shoulders, legs, backs,
midriffs – whichever bit of skin you
are most proud of, slather it in fake
tan and get it out on show!
BUT avoid tarty or trashy: the
festival bills itself as the north east’s
answer to Royal Ascot – and while
it is not nearly as formal in its dress
code, the racecourse does invite
guests to be ‘smart’.
Team gorgeous glittering dresses
with hats or fascinators, make the
most of your hair and your make-up
and put on your biggest smile – this is
the type of occasion where there is no
such thing as OTT.
Gents: collared shirts are required
but it is not unpopular to team this
with a funky take on tweeds – jackets,
waiscoats, flat caps – or jazz up your
city suit with a loud shirt.
