A day at the races is exciting and fun, a chance to dress up and show off your style prowess. It also means exposure to the elements: sun, rain and wind, which play havoc with your skin and make-up. To prevent make-up melting, creasing and smearing here are a few tips to follow:

1. Sunscreen: For a day outside, sun cream is essential, but it can be heavy on the skin and leave the face feeling greasy and the pores clogged up. Look for an oil-free face sun cream to help give a matte finish and shine-free complexion. Your sunscreen should have both UVA and UVB protection. UVB: The SPF of a sunscreen relates to UVB – the rays that cause sunburn and can lead to skin cancer. UVA: UVA rays are present even on cloudy days, cause premature ageing and are linked to melanoma. Not all sunscreens have UVA protection. To check if a sunscreen has UVA protection look for PA +++ or the words ' Broad Spectrum ' on the bottle. Allow the sunscreen to fully absorb into the skin for approximately 30 minutes before applying primer.

2. Primer: Not only does a primer help achieve a smooth, even complexion by sealing the pores and blurring fine lines, but it helps make-up stay on longer by decreasing sweating through the pores. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer is a lightweight oil-free gel which also provides UVB / UVA protection of SPF30 PA +++. Price £ 30 from John Lewis.

3. Eyeshadow primer: This primer creates a base for eyeshadow to cling to so it lasts longer, stays in place and keeps its colour. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, £ 18, preps the lids for all-day eyeshadow. It blends on all skin tones and dries invisibly. Urban Decay also has a primer with an anti-aging formula to reduce the appearance of wrinkles with optical blurring pigments that create a soft focus effect to instantly wake up tired looking eyes and minimise the appearance of imperfections. 4. Foundation: For summer, a liquid foundation is best, as cream foundations are heavier and tend to melt due to their creamy formula. Use sparingly, as any blemishes can be hidden by your concealer. Boots ' No. 7 Stay Perfect is said to‘ stay perfect’ for up to 24 hours’ wear, is weatherproof and won’ t cake or flake on dry skin, or slide or shine on oily skin. Sounds perfect! 5. Concealer: This great cover-up is a must for concealing blemishes, bags and lightening dark circles. Just add to the problem areas to create an even skin tone. For the face use a concealer shade that matches your foundation shade. Estee Lauder Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer lasts for up to 15 hours and won’ t slip, slide or melt away. 6. Eye Concealer: For the eyes use a concealer one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Benefit Industrial Strength Concealer camouflages without creasing, smudging or wearing off. Price £ 17.50 from John Lewis.

7. Mascara and Eyeliner: Panda eyes are not a good look, so to prevent mascara and eyeliner from melting or smudging choose waterproof products. 7a. Urban Decay Razor Sharp Water-Resistant Longwear Liquid Eyeliner is an intensely pigmented liquid liner that lasts all day, and there are 20 beautiful colours to choose from. 8. Eyebrows: A great way to prevent eyebrow meltdown is to have them dyed professionally. However, if for some reason you couldn’ t make it to the brow bar, try Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow Kit. This is waterproof and holds up under all conditions. Price £ 31 from Debenhams.

9. Blusher and Lips: For both lips and cheeks, use a stain which lasts longer than ordinary blushers and lipsticks in warm weather and doesn’ t appear sticky. Yves Saint Laurent Kiss & Blush Lip & Cheek Stain has a luminous matte finish. Price £ 29 from John Lewis. For more moisture on the lips, apply a lip balm with SPF over the stain.
