Created by artist Barnaby Evans , WaterFire Providence highlights the beauty of the Providence and Woonasquatucket rivers at night , illuminated by giant cauldrons of fire .
Where to park : Though WaterFire starts at dusk , arrive early to get parking close by . There are non-metered spots on Benefit Street and parking is free after 6 p . m . with prime spots on North Main Street .
Best places for viewing : Near the bridges at RISD and along the Canal Walk . If you get there early , you can snag a seat on the side of the canal . Also , with an outdoor theater-like setup , Waterplace Park is a great place to catch the initial lightings and see the river aglow .
Get another perspective : To get even closer to the action , take a romantic ride down the Providence River during WaterFire . Boat rides from Providence River Boat Company and La Gondola Providence both last thirty minutes . providenceriverboat . com ; gondolari . com
