WRITERS
A writer of the weird fiction genre, H.P. Lovecraft
was born in Providence in 1890. Today, his
tombstone reads, “I am Providence.” Author
Stephen King has called him “the twentieth
century’s greatest practitioner of the classic
horror tale.” SPONSORED CONTENT
HISTORY
John and Moses Brown, who grew up in Prov-
idence, co-founded the renowned Ivy League
school Brown University. The brothers often
found themselves at odds, as John was a
wealthy statesman who avidly supported slav-
ery while Moses was a well-known New England
abolitionist. Moses also funded the design
construction of some of the first factory hous-
es for spinning machines, including Slater Mill.
Cormac McCarthy is a Pulitzer Prize winning
novelist, playwright and screenwriter from
Providence. His novel No Country for Old Men
was adapted into an Academy Award-winning
film. Known to the world as a wealthy and prominent
family during the Gilded Age, Rhode Islanders
remember the Vanderbilts for the luxurious
oceanfront ‘summer cottages’ they built in
Newport.
