Academic Camps PREPARING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL READING AND WRITING Sixth grade is the first big step on the path toward being prepared for Upper School and college level reading and writing. Because the demands are different in Middle School than in previous years, this camp will provide instruction to help students develop a solid foundation in the language arts. The writing portion of camp will focus on grammar instruction, including parts of speech, clauses, and mechanics. Over the course of the week, each camper will write a three-paragraph paper and learn about the components that make a strong essay: developing ideas, composing a thesis statement, and organizing the paper appropriately. The reading instruction will focus on reading strategies and applying them to both fiction and non-fiction texts—time will be dedicated each day to accomplishing summer reading! In addition to the focus on reading and writing, there will be instruction about developing good organizational habits, including working in Google Classroom, efficient management of individual classes, and communication techniques. Instructor: Elizabeth Gibson, Steward faculty Grade: 6 Date/Time: July 8 – 12; 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost: $375 MIDDLE SCHOOL READING AND WRITING 201 Students who have adjusted to managing a Middle School schedule but who need to step up their language arts skills will benefit from this camp. Upon entering Upper School, students need to know how to write well and read efficiently. To help them prepare, this camp will focus on two areas: writing and reading. The written work will include grammar instruction, such as a brief review of parts of speech, an in-depth look at clauses, and lessons in mechanics; and a five-paragraph essay, developing ideas with solid supporting evidence, focusing on composing a thesis statement, and organizing a paper appropriately. The reading instruction will focus on strategies and how to apply them to both fiction and non-fiction texts, which is often more demanding as students get older. Each day, time will be set aside to allow students to cross off some summer reading from their “to-do” lists. Instructor: Elizabeth Gibson, Steward faculty Grades: 7 – 8 Date/Time: July 15 – 19; 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost: $375 Rising sixth-grade students are encouraged to register for Preparing for Middle School Reading and Writing.
