HEALTH ASSESSEMENT
By Cathy Klein, UF Health Jacksonville
Hope Chapel Ministries hosted a successful health fair on
Saturday, June 30, 2018 for hundreds of people who attended.
The event hosted multiple health and wellness vendors and
even provided instruction on healthy exercise techniques. A
cardiovascular-metabolic health assessment was provided
to 80 participants by a medical team from the University of
Florida Health-Jacksonville Cardiovascular Center. Heart
disease is the number one killer of men and women in the
United States and it especially affects African Americans and
Hispanic Americans.
This health screening was part of a Jacksonville- wide study to
assess cardiovascular-metabolic risk profiles of local groups.
The study aims to better understand the health needs and pre-
ventive interventions needed across Jacksonville in a variety
of communities. This screening at Hope Chapel Ministries
was the first in that area of the city and had the largest
turnout of interested participants compared to other similar
events done by the medical team at University of Florida
Health-Jacksonville.

Dr. Levonne Mitchell-Samon was instrumental in bringing the
UF Health assessment and other important health services to
Hope Chapel that day and worked closely with Carla Jenkins
who organized many volunteers, each of whom contributed
to a wonderful event for everyone to enjoy.
The medical director of this study, Gladys Velarde, MD, brought
a medical team of physicians and medical assistants to do
the health assessment. Dr. Velarde was quoted as saying, “I
am grateful to the leadership and the individual members of
Hope Chapel Ministries for organizing this important health
screening. My goal was to bring vital health information to
Hope Chapel Ministries members and answer each person’s
questions about their heart health. I believe we achieved a
great success today towards that goal.”
