At a recent showcase tournament, the obvious infiltration of technology in youth soccer stared me right in the face. Video cameras( on some fields, five to seven of them!) on tripods towered above me. I observed some players with an upper-back bulge that indicated a GPS tracker. I walked by parents and recruiters with their heads buried in hand-held devices. I believe it is safe to say that technology is now commonplace on youth soccer weekends. As such, take a moment to imagine the number of video clips and data gathered and consumed from a standard soccer match. Distance covered, ball touches and passing accuracy are just some of the data collected. Despite the plethora of data available, I question whether we are using it to enhance individual soccer player development.
