Summer 2025 Gavel | 页面 7

come together with a shared purpose of promoting justice and upholding the honor of the legal profession.
SBAND does meaningful work, and it needs the engagement of its members to thrive. Whether through serving on a committee, participating in a section focused on a specific area of practice, or working the SBAND Foundation, there are countless ways to get involved.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS SBAND PRESIDENT OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
I want to continue the good work of the past-presidents, including promoting the legal profession to North Dakota students and expanding rural access to justice. In February 2025, SBAND completed a strategic planning process that resulted in two key initiatives for the year ahead. First, in partnership with Legal Services of North Dakota, we are committed to expanding efforts to close the access to justice gap. Second, we will focus on promoting the mental health and well-being of our members. I will work to move SBAND forward on these key initiatives.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU SEE IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION IN GENERAL AND IN NORTH DAKOTA?
We’ re in a time of significant change in the legal profession. SBAND remains committed to its membership and being mindful of the constraints of the Keller doctrine. One of our most important responsibilities is to support the judiciary and uphold the integrity of the courts. The Rule of Law isn’ t just a concept, it is something lawyers defend and reinforce every day, in every case they undertake and for every client they represent.
At the same time, emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, are reshaping our profession. While AI can be a powerful tool, it must be used thoughtfully, responsibly, and in line with our Rules of Professional Conduct.
Access to justice remains a critical issue in North Dakota. Everyone deserves access to legal advice and competent representation, regardless of where they live. Attorney retention and recruitment are crucial, and we need to encourage more North Dakotans to consider careers in law and help them return to practice in rural communities.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR LAW STUDENTS AND YOUNG LAWYERS AS THEY ENTER THE LAW PROFESSION?
Law school can be tough, but the friendships you make will support you both personally and professionally. Don’ t give up when you feel that inevitable imposter syndrome. You will learn something new every day that adds to your abilities. Understanding legal principles and reasoning is more important than memorization – it will help you explain complex ideas clearly to clients. Always be professional and respectful to everyone you meet. A strong work ethic and a willingness to learn will open doors throughout your career.
HOW HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE OUTSIDE OF YOUR LEGAL CAREER?
I have been lucky to volunteer with some great organizations, including John Larson Post No. 247 of the American Legion in Petersburg as a taps player with the Honor Guard, Junior Achievement in Minot, and as a confirmation mentor at my church. I have served on the boards of local nonprofits that serve the Minot area. I encourage the next generation of lawyers by hosting job shadowing opportunities, coaching high school mock trial teams, and participating in local career fairs.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
I love to travel, read, bake, and spend time with my family. My husband and I enjoy hitting the road on his Harley and driving my’ 54 Chevy pickup to classic car shows. Our family time is spent laughing, fishing, four-wheeling, skiing, baking during the holidays, and playing cards. Some of us are devoted to Star Wars and Harry Potter, and the rest … well, we love them anyway.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
I am excited to serve as president of SBAND. I look forward to connecting with as many of you as possible.
