all graduates must complete six credits of experiential learning to graduate.
The ABA is actively considering doubling this amount to 12 credits. At its best, experiential education provides students with pedagogically-based training in how to make theoretical law work for real clients with real needs. We must make sure our processes and procedures work to ensure each of our students receives the best experiential education possible.
We will continue to adjust our curriculum to prepare for the implementation of the NextGen Bar exam. While North Dakota will not make the switch until July 2027, eight jurisdictions from Connecticut to Guam will implement the exam in July 2026. The National Conference of Bar Examiners and the North Dakota Board of Law Examiners are making every effort to be prepared for the transition, we expect to learn about this new exam and how to best prepare our students for it over the next year or so.

We will spend part of this time continuing our efforts to ensure our citizens in rural communities have access to justice and legal services. We have worked with SBAND and the courts, supported by some very generous support from donors, to help students identify field placements across the state. We have already seen a significant increase in the number of our graduates choosing to stay in North Dakota to begin their legal careers. We hope for, and the state seriously needs, this trend to continue.
The UND School of Law is well positioned to meet the challenges facing legal education. Our core faculty remains strong and committed to student learning in both doctrinal and lawyering skills. Our recently revised curriculum is well designed to take people from new students to fledgling professionals. With the great support we have received from SBAND, the courts, and our donors, and the continuing commitment of the university and the State Board of Higher Education, the UND School of Law will be a part of making sure this state has the legal professionals it needs.
