2022 WINNERS
New chairman . New challenge . Same commitment to a better environmental future .
This year ’ s Chairman ’ s Challenge looked a little different . When Alex Taylor took the helm as chairman this year , he issued a new sustainability challenge to employees focused on reducing their carbon footprint . As usual , Cox employees rose to the challenge to better understand their energy use and take action to reduce what they use and balance the rest .
The Chairman ’ s Challenge supports our Cox Conserves initiatives , which were launched by Chairman Emeritus Jim Kennedy in 2007 to make Cox a more environmentally sustainable company . It ’ s all part of our Purpose to build a better future for the next generation .
Six employees from across our businesses deserve a special shoutout for their work during this year ’ s challenge . They earned the most points for their carbonreducing actions during the contest and worked with the James M . Cox Foundation to select environmental nonprofits to receive grants . Each winner helped award $ 15,000 and each runner-up helped award $ 2,500 . These six individuals also received an electric scooter .
Using Cox Impact , our employee engagement tool , more than 1,500 employees calculated their estimated annual carbon footprint . They earned points by using the calculator ; they also took nearly 10,000 actions to increase their knowledge about carbon , learn how to reduce their footprint and contribute to Cox ’ s goal to become carbon neutral by 2034 .
Collectively , employee actions reduced emissions equivalent to 32 railroad cars of coal — removing 3,700 pounds of litter and diverting 10,000 pounds of materials from landfills by recycling . More than 400 employees also volunteered over 1,000 hours during the challenge to create outdoor classrooms and beautify parks .
