Let’s be clear at the outset: Russia’s act of aggression in the Ukraine was neither an act of war fought “justly” in protection of the “Motherland” or what it labelled aligned provinces, nor is it merely a “special military operation” as Putin claimed in his May 9th Victory Day speech. It is nothing less than a terroristic act, designed specifically to disrupt the world order by destroying human dignity so to thereby make it difficult if not impossible to live a dignified human existence.

Just Wars and International Conventions

There are distinct theoretical and historical terms, traditions, and conditions that outline and define forms war may take – most notably those that arise through the just war tradition. Though complex, these find theoretical and historical precedent in the work of St. Thomas Aquinas and through various international rules and agreements.
