Second, there is no evidence to suggest that smaller communities are naturally more just. As Donald Alexander notes, sociologists and anthropologists have well-documented “the capacity for many small communities for mean-spiritedness and conflict.” A person even questions whether small, homogeneous communities, isolated from objective evaluations, don’t engender tendencies that embrace “blood and soil” ideologies, under which some of the heinous crimes of this century have been carried out.64 Is it not the case such isolated communities have much in common with the new, conservative, wall communities that sprung up in suburban communities throughout America? How, then, a person might ask, are they so enlightened?
In total, because no means is offered for institutionally testing and determining new political structures in light of the past, Kemmis had to resort, as did Sale and Wilkinson before him, to a romanticized version of community. Such an approach leaves much to be desired, because, in the words of Janet Biehl, “we cannot build an ecological society unless we eliminate hierarchy in social and political relations, not to speak of mystical ideologies whose roots lie in a superstition-laden past.”65
What does the science, ethic, and politics of place teach us? Local presence and awareness are critical to forming human communities, but a means must be found for sharing these foundations with others across the nation and globe.
