TASTE › OTTERBEIN COOKIES We love our cookies here. The family-run Otterbein bakery has been producing beloved local cookies for more than a century — and nowadays, they make more than a million a year, packing them into their signature red-and-white paper bags. The sugar cookie is the original, and it’s a bona fide local holiday tradition. But lemon, chocolate chip, ginger, oatmeal raisin and orange whitechocolate chip are also popular, no matter the season. TASTE IT Sold locally in most grocery stores and specialty markets › PIT BEEF Often called Maryland’s answer to barbecue — though it has little in common with actual barbecue — Baltimore pit beef is usually made as a round roast that’s cooked over coals in an open pit, then sliced thin and piled high atop a Kaiser roll or white bread. It’s slathered in either horseradish sauce and rings of white onion or, sometimes, a tomato-based barbecue sauce. TASTE IT The Baltimore Farmer’s Market & Bazaar; Chaps Pit Beef 24 Baltimore.org
