BERGER
COOKIES
A chocolatey icon of Baltimore, this
sugary treat has been sweetening
the region since 1835. The basics:
A dome-shaped, cakey vanilla
cookie base is hand-dipped with a
thick mound of fudge frosting. Ask
any Baltimorean, and they’ll tell
you: Bergers are the best.

SNOWBALLS
In the dog days of summer, is
there anything more refreshing
than an icy, fruity snowball? Not
in Baltimore. Our city’s take on
the snow cone includes chopped
ice (the better to withstand the
region’s hot, humid weather)
covered with brightly hued, bold
fruit flavoring, all served up in a
Styrofoam cup. The frozen treats
hearken back to the 1800s, when
Baltimore mothers would shave
ice off the blocks being shipped up
and down the coast and add their
own flavoring. Skylite and egg
custard are local favorites — just
don’t forget to get the traditional
marshmallow fluff on top.
TASTE IT Icy Delights (Rosedale,
Dundalk, Highlandtown); Bmore
Licks (Canton); One Sweet Moment
(Hamilton) and many more
