The Port of San Francisco’s 5-Year Strategic Plan Creates a Wealth of Contractor Opportunities

As a public enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco, The Port of San Francisco manages 7½ miles of waterfront property and is responsible for balancing the promotion of maritime and commercial opportunities with developing recreational facilities for public use, as well as protecting the area’s natural resources. Contractor Tools recently spoke with Port of San Francisco Executive Director, Elaine Forbes, and Contract Administrator, Boris Delepine, to learn more about the Port’s 5-Year Strategic Plan and the wide range of related construction opportunities available for local and small contractors.

The Strategic Plan sets out long-term goals in seven key areas: renewal, engagement, liveability, resiliency, sustainability, economic vitality and stability. Each overarching goal is broken down into more specific priorities, such as maintaining some of the Port’s historical usage and significance, while updating and expanding various areas to accommodate a more diverse array of residents, businesses, artisans, and members of the general public.

This all-encompassing vision by necessity includes considerable repairs and maintenance, as well as new construction. One example of the scale of projects available is the recent passage of the Prop A Seawall Bond approved by voters, which will create a minimum of $425 Million worth of work toward development of a seismic seawall. Through consistent outreach efforts, the Port has been encouraging contractors in various trades to find out how they might participate in the multitude of projects created by the Strategic Plan.
