At Selskar College, Shauna is performing very well academically. She received excellent results in her Junior Certificate including an A in Higher Level Home Economics.

While she has access to Special Needs Assistance, she works very independently as much as possible in school. She uses enlarged text and technology to assist her schoolwork. Shauna is very sociable and is considerate of the feelings of others. She contributes well in her class group and to the general school community. She has no expectation of preferential treatment and simply gets on with each task with good humour and always in the spirit of cooperation.

Despite her daily challenges, Shauna has a very active life outside of school. She is a member of the Girl Guides and attained the gold medal award in 2016, representing Wexford in the Chief Commissioner’s Award in Dublin. She was awarded Girl Guide Leader of the Year in her local unit for 3 successive years - 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Shauna is an active fundraiser for Mental Health in Wexford and has completed the annual Darkness into Light event. She also fundraises for St Mary’s Football Club in Maudlintown, of which she is a member.

Shauna has been a guest speaker at the Lions Club International Weekend in Wexford and was the invited motivational speaker at the Opening of the Operation Transformation event in Maudlintown in 2018.

She is currently a member of the Junior Academy of Golf in Wexford – with some success on the course. Shauna attained her sailing badge and Water Safety award in 2016.

Shauna was nominated for this award by her school in recognition of her ongoing achievements in and out of school. Since losing her sight, she has realised so much and is always willing to embrace new experiences. She uses her story to inspire, motivate and encourage others that all is possible, sometimes through alternative routes. She realises the importance of self-acceptance and self-belief and is determined to have a fulfilling life as an active member of society. She inspires all of us at Selskar College to do the same and we are so proud of her.
