JCSP schools in Waterford & Wexford ETB participated in the inaugural JCSP South-East Super Spellers competition earlier this year organised by JCSP Librarians, Éadaoin Quinn (Enniscorthy Vocational College), Hilary Cantwell (St. Paul’s Community College), Jessica Whelan (Colaiste Chathail Naofa), and Lee Dickerson (Selskar College) together with the JCSP Project Librarian, Kathleen Moran.

Traditional spelling tests and/or a spelling bee style competition took place in individual schools using commonly misspelt words and subject specific spellings during February and March. Top three spellers from each school then participated in a highly competitive final on the 15th March in the beautiful Carrickphierish public library in Waterford.

Recently published books by Irish authors, Eoin Colfer, Jane Mitchell and Mark Rudden provided the spelling lists for the final and all finalists embraced the competition with great enthusiasm. Challenging would be one word to describe the spellings but not for the teams competing on the day. Congratulations to all the finalists and particularly the overall winners Ramsgrange Community School, with Enniscorthy Vocational College and Coláiste an Átha coming in a close second and third place.

Feedback from the event has been extremely positive and already schools are looking forward to competing next year, including Ramsgrange who wish to defend their title!
