Grainne Ní Chuirrín - St. Pauls Community College

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Gráinne Ní Chuirrín and I am a native Irish speaker from the Gaeltacht area of An Rinn, Dungarvan, Co.Waterford. I am a qualified Art teacher and Art Therapist.I work as a full time Behaviour For Learning teacher in St.Paul's Community College, Waterford.

Is the job as Behaviour for Learning Teacher what you expected?

The job as BFL Teacher is both challenging and extremely rewarding. I monitor the behaviour of individual students and implement targeted interventions to support their needs whilst in education.

What is a typical work day like for you?

A typical day would be that I arrive to work at 8.30 am. I check in with my students outside their lockers thus, making sure they are organised and well equiped for their day. I meet with individuals and student groups throughout the day checking in with regard to behaviour and the monitoring of same. I implement daily and weekly targets re behaviour, organisation and the general well being of my students. I attend meetings with management, Year Heads and outside agencies re the care needs of my students. Liaising with other teachers, professionals and parents is mandatory in my role as BFL teacher.

Is the job what you expected?

Yes the job is what I expected. I have built up a great rapport with colleagues and with my students. I am a professional who considers and works with the students needs.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the students. Supporting them in school and throughout their education. Making them believe that anything is possible and they can succeed in life should they try.

What are you hoping to change about the role?

What I am hoping to change about the role is to create awareness among my colleagues and an understanding of the effectiveness a BFL teacher can have on a student. I am very lucky in my school as the management are fully supportive in my role.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to travel and make art. I find this very therapeutic. I love shopping and dining out in differing restaurants. I am an adventurous foodie. I am also into sport. I play Gaelic football, attend the gym and pilates class on a weekly basis. I am very active.
