Wexford’s International Cookery Demonstration celebrating Adult Learner’s Week 2017

WWETB Adult Literacy Service and YOUTHTRAIN Wexford hosted an international cookery demonstration in YOUTHTRAIN Wexford to celebrate Adult Learner’s Week.

The event was remarkable for the variety of international dishes cooked and consumed in one location on last Wednesday lunchtime.

Students of the WWETB English language course used the state of the art kitchen facility in the YOUTHTRAIN premises in Whitemills Industrial Estate to demonstrate not only their culinary skills but also their English language skills. Each of the students presented a dish which showed the traditional cooking of their home country. The format of the event involved producing a written recipe, an explanation of its cultural importance in their native cuisine and cooking the dish in front of an invited audience.

The following countries were represented Egypt, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Thailand, Hungary, Belarus, and Bangladesh. YOUTHTRAIN students from Ireland and Slovakia formed an intercultural learning partnership at the event providing the local knowledge and supporting their visiting colleagues to use the facility to best effect.

The celebration of international cooking was designed by WWETB English language tutor Aniko Lonergan to provide a formal but entertaining assessment opportunity for her students. The event was filmed and will be used for the end of course assessment in June. The language students taking part were Angela Bulavinets, Sylwia Graczyk, Amany Abdelattif Hamed, Lamiaa Hegab, Doaa Ibrahim, Judith Pap, Elisabeta Tic, Sutisa Yaitoeng, Nasrul Syed and Olga Gavrilova.

The Adult Literacy Service would like to thank the staff in YOUTHTRAIN for the welcome and the excellent facility which made the event so successful, in particular Niamh and Paul O Brien. The international students were supported by YOUTHTRAIN culinary skills students Monika, Leah, Mark and Shauna.
