An enjoyable international event took place in New Ross Adult Education Centre on Monday 6th March promoted by Waterford Wexford Education and Training Board.

The event to celebrate Adult Learner’s Week involved the English language students from the Monday evening class, cooking and speaking about a desert, cake or other sweet dish that represents their country’s cooking tradition. The students explained the recipe to each other and to a group of invited guests.

Baking from the following countries were tasted and shared during the evening; Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Poland, Spain, Greece, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

The guest of honour was Sean Sutton from The Bakehouse in South Street who was impressed by the variety and quality of the baking exhibits. The discussion revolved around the similarities and difference in the various European cuisines and the place of each dish in the tradition. Sean also encouraged the students to explore the opportunities that exist in local markets and shops for quality, locally produced food.

The event was planned by WWETB English language tutor Ingrid Arfa and Don Murphy WWETB Adult Literacy Organiser Wexford.
