the light
AT THE END
OF THE TUNNEL
I
I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! The last of
the baseboards are nailed in, fixtures hung, paint has dried
and our reno project is finally looking like a home. (Check out

No matter whether you DIY or hire professionals, a reno
project can take a toll on you mentally and physically. (See
Why You Should Consider an Addition on page 72) Things
rarely go as planned! Along the way, there will always be
minor adjustments, compromises and little surprises. I can’t
stress enough the importance of a contingency budget as you
never know what lurks behind the shadows of a renovation
project.
They say that a reno or building of a house will test a
marriage. If you struggle to agree with your spouse on where
to go on date night, you can only imagine the back and forth
debate over a paint colour. (See How to Paint Vinyl Siding on
page 70) Did I mention you’ll also have adventures along the
way? Looking back, I feel that air nailers should come with tags
on them, much like cigarette packs, “Caution! May cause death
if operated into the wee hours of the morning.”
My mother seems to think that I’m torturing my wife, Mandy,
through this process. “First you take away her kitchen, now the
poor woman doesn’t have a bathtub!” I quickly informed my
mother that my wife has two legs and she can walk downstairs
to her second bathroom. So she went almost a month without
kitchen cabinets. ..a counter top...or a kitchen sink. In hindsight,
there is something to be said about moving out during a
major reno!
