How can drones, robots, and smart technology help life and businesses in the North thrive?
That was the question driving the collaboration among the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Centria University of Applied Sciences, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and Luleå University of Technology. Together, we showed how small and medium-sized enterprises( SMEs) could turn advanced technologies into real-world, innovative solutions. The activities demonstrated how solutions using drones( UAVs), ground robots( UGVs), and other advanced technologies can make a difference in everyday life and business. Think safer winter roads, early avalanche warnings, spectacular drone light shows, online music creation, and even keeping geese out of parks and fields.
In several case studies, drones and robots have supported solution development, for example, by filming landscapes to create 3D visualizations or by carrying scanners to build detailed digital twins. These technologies are not just gadgets— they are gateways to innovative services, smarter operations, and creative ideas.
What made this project special?
It was built around real challenges faced by companies and communities, with the goal of boosting innovation, strengthening entrepreneurship, and demonstrating how technologies can spark ideas for new services across sectors. The work was also connected to global ambitions. By aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals— SDG 9( innovation), SDG 11( safe and resilient communities), and SDG 4( learning and knowledge sharing)— the results contributed to a future in which technology supports the sustainable development of business and society.
This report presents the project’ s vision, its foundations, and examples of the case studies developed.
