LAWS PERTAINING TO HUNTING EQUIPMENT 17
HUNTER ORANGE CLOTHING REQUIREMENT
Hunter orange is defined as a daylight fluorescent orange color with a dominant wave length between 595 and 605 nanometers, excitation purity of at least 85 % and luminance factor of at least 40 %. A decal on an article of clothing that is otherwise solid hunter orange is permissible. Articles of hunter orange clothing must be in good and serviceable condition and visible from all sides.
CROSSBOW AND FIREARMS
TWO ARTICLES OF ORANGE REQUIRED
Firearms and Muzzleloader Seasons on Deer When hunting any species with a firearm, muzzleloader, or crossbow during the firearms or muzzleloader season for deer, including deer hunting Youth Days. One article must be a solid-colored hunter orange hat; the other must cover a major portion of the torso, such as a jacket, vest, coat or poncho and must be a minimum of 50 % hunter orange in color( camouflage orange patterns of at least 50 % orange are legal).
CROSSBOW AND FIREARMS
NO ARTICLES OF ORANGE REQUIRED
• When hunting waterfowl as long as the hunter is hunting from a boat, blind, or in conjunction with waterfowl decoys.
• When hunting wild turkey, bear, small game, or furbearers with a firearm or crossbow – unless that WMD is open to moose hunting at that time or during a firearms or muzzleloader season for deer.
Example: When hunting ruffed grouse during the firearms season on deer, two articles of orange are required.
ONE ARTICLE OF ORANGE REQUIRED
Moose Hunting Season When hunting any species with a firearm, muzzleloader, or crossbow in a WMD open to moose hunting.
Example: When hunting ruffed grouse in a WMD open to moose hunting, one article of orange is required.
BOW AND ARROW HUNTERS When hunting with bow and arrow, hunter orange is not required. The Department recommends bow and arrow hunters wear at least one article of orange when navigating through the landscape.
CROSSBOW AND FIREARMS
Religious Exemption: Any hunter whose religion prohibits wearing hunter orange may wear red instead. All minimum wear requirements for hunter orange still apply when hunter red is substituted for hunter orange.
VERTICAL BOW
SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
• Although not required, the Department recommends always wearing at least one article of orange. Maine forests can be very thick, and orange helps alert other hunters, including those in your hunting party, to your location.
• Turkey hunters or those hunting from a blind should consider marking their location with hunter orange.
