WaSH Hub aims to enhance water, sanitation and hygiene promotion capacities in Central America

limate limate change and

poor water management in Latin America have caused a large-scale water scarcity problem, resulting in at-risk populations lacking the vital liquid for their livelihoods.

In addition, more and more recurrent disasters are affecting the Central American region, aggravating the situation of the water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WaSH) sector.

To promote a center for emergency management with a WaSH approach, in which human and logistical capacities are strengthened

to anticipate and respond to different emergencies, 6 Red Cross National Societies agreed to integrate the WaSH Hub in Central America.

After exchanges held on April 20 and 21 in Guatemala City, between more than 40 presidents, directors, water and sanitation specialists from the Guatemalan Red Cross, Honduran Red Cross, Salvadoran Red Cross, Nicaraguan Red Cross, Costa Rican Red Cross, Panamanian Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the "Guatemala Declaration" was signed, making official the regional cooperation for the Hub.

The event was held as part of the celebration of the 100 anniversaty of the Guatemalan Red Cross, boosting the relevance of the initiative.
