decades, hurricanes Eta and Iota in 2020, and Mitch in 1998 brought irrecoverable damage and losses to thousands of families in Guatemala. The increase in the recurrence of such extreme events reinforces the importance of anticipatory action. According to forecasts of the potential impacts of floods associated to tropical storm Julia in October 2022, the Guatemalan Red Cross activated its Early Action Plan.

Teams of specialists and volunteers were deployed to lead early actions in support of communities at risk, located in the departments of Izabal and Alta Verapaz, in the northeastern part of the country.

More than 1,300 families received water, along with water filters, and more than 700 families received funds to meet their priority needs ahead of the effects of the floods.

The strategic actions of the Guatemalan Red Cross represent a milestone in terms of humanitarian assistance with an anticipatory action approach in the country.
