Campur, a Guatemalan community resilient to the impacts of hurricanes Eta and Iota

fter being flooded

during two months by the effects of hurricanes Eta and Iota at the end of 2020, Campur, a community located in the Alta Verapaz department at the northern part of Guatemala, is a clear example of resilience.

As part of the risk analysis for the Guatemalan Red Cross' Tropical Storm Early Action Plan, representatives of the German Red Cross visited Campur, together with the National Society, to learn about the impact of disasters in the area.

Due to the impacts of Eta and Iota, it is estimated that around 450 houses were completely flooded, including schools, churches and relief centers. Families returned as soon as the water receded. To rebuild their homes and businesses, they took out loans or invested remittances received.

They built on uncertainty.

People like Raúl Herrera, a doctor and rescuer volunteer from the Guatemalan Red Cross, who lost his house and all his belongings in Campur, are a reflection of resilience in the community.

Despite being directly affected by the disaster, it is a joy to be able to serve and help my community as I have done for the past 5 years.
