Central America is one of the regions of the world most at risk of impacts related to extreme hydrometeorological events.

Extreme events are just one of the top five concerns identified by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 2018 special report on global warming of 1.5°C, implying greater difficulties in achieving effective adaptation to climate change.

But this goes beyond statistics. We are talking about families, communities, thousands of lives directly affected by the emergency effects of climate change.

For instance, some of them are already being felt in many countries in the region, particularly in communities located in León, Nicaragua, Sula Valley, Honduras and Parrita, Costa Rica.

Below is a series of stories of how climate is changing lives, "Voices from the Communities", including recent experiences related to the effects of extreme events such as drought and hurricanes.

José María Chévez, with more than 35 years of volunteering in the Nicaraguan Red Cross branch in León, and recently appointed president, shares how his community has been affected by the effects of climate change.
