Bamboo or Bambusoideae (if you prefer to be technical) is an
evergreen perennial of the grass family. When Jamaican’s think of
bamboo we envision rolling hills in the countryside and can almost
hear the song of the hollows as they sway in the wind. Our very own
scenic attraction, Holland Bamboo, features a four kilometre drive
where bamboo forms a canopy that overarches the road and blankets
the embankment with browned leaves.
Bamboo has become a
buzzword of late with a
renewed focus on the
economic value of plant.
Prospective entrepreneurial
opportunities stemming
from bamboo in Jamaica
range anywhere from hand
towels to fabrics. More
recently, bamboo straws
have been eyed as the nation
seeks to cut back on plastic
use. Traditionally, the plant
has been revered for its
multiplicity of uses in many
cultures and so its versatility
makes it a prime candidate
for enterprise.
Astute entrepreneurs would
want to consider this plant as
a viable venture as bamboo is
versatile enough to be a raw
material for manufacturing
or to be used in its raw form
for products and services.
Bamboo can be the next ‘best
thing’ for entrepreneurs and
hopefuls looking to create
and sustain a business in
Jamaica.
Bamboo has
become a
buzzword
