You once worked at the Scientific
Research Council (SRC). How did
that experience impact your work
with Bambusa?
I have a BSc degree in Biochemistry
and did minor studies in Computer
Science. Therefore, I have a strong
appreciation and respect for
nature’s design of our products and
how best to tailor them for our
clients. This has helped
considerably with maintaining and
continuously improving product
quality.
Nevertheless, I benefited from
being a lead auditor at SRC for ISO
17025, the international standard
for testing and calibration
laboratories. That experience
helped me hone my quality
management skills.
How would you describe the
experience of starting a business
in Jamaica?
I view the experience of starting a
business in Jamaica as both
challenging and rewarding. Jamaica
However, there are three challenges I
have identified with successfully
starting a business in Jamaica.
1. How clients pay. Small
businesses can’t survive if clients
pay whenever they feel like.
Unstable cash flow has caused
many small businesses to die.
2. Businesses financing through
unsecured loans is ridiculous. The
banks are still not willing to offer
better financing options to small
business owners. Things are slowly
improving but we still aren’t there
yet.
3. Women in business need greater
access to resources and training
tailored to their needs.. There are
support groups for women and
Jamaican female entrepreneurs, but
islandwide access is limited.
Successful female entrepreneurs
can help reshape the way we
support each other. Once you get to
the top, it’s definitely on you to send
the elevator back down.
is my home and I love what I do.
