me the stark difference between
being someone who has a skill
that’s used to provide a service
and running a business.
That’s insightful! What’s the
difference?
I can best explain the difference by
telling you the story of how both
businesses evolved and why I ended
up having to close the salon. I
attended teacher’s college during
the early years of the salon. Towards
the end of my degree, I was offered
a job as a cosmetology teacher in
Mandeville. This meant that I had to
leave the salon so that I could live in
Mandeville for work.
I left with a plan - travel to Portmore
on weekends to serve clients and
leave two team members to who
worked with me to run the salon
during the week. That was about it.
However, that plan failed over
time. I began to get complacent and
the people I left to run the salon didn’t
treat it like their own.
Things had already gone too far
downhill by the time I returned to
Portmore full-time in 2011. Customers
were no longer there. That didn’t mean,
