We live for Kodak moments, always
trying to get the best shot so that
we reduce the risk of special
moments fading from memory.
Photos are exquisite. They capture a
wide range of emotions and can
force you to think deeply about the
message being portrayed. However,
there’s nothing more memorable
than creating a 3-dimensional
replica of the most crucial
milestones in your life.
This is where Fiona Lyn-Johnston’s artistic eye steps in. She has been blessed with amazing skill to sculpt
intimate moments that can last a lifetime. I caught up with her recently to learn more about her passion and
the intricacies of her business.
Why Sculpted Memories?
Fiona’s passion for sculpting began 17 years ago when her first child, Sidnee, was born. She looked in the
mirror one day while pregnant and was awe-struck by the beauty of the life growing inside her. It suddenly hit
her that she wouldn’t have a physical reminder of what her stomach looked like. Sure, she’d have pictures that
showed her growing tummy. Those pictures, however, wouldn’t be able to capture the intense emotions she
felt in that moment the way a casting would.
So, she pulled out her materials and made a casting of her tummy, a casting that’s still perched on a wall of her
mother’s house. Each time she goes home to visit she’s reminded of that unbreakable bond she felt while
Sidnee was growing inside her.
Throughout the years, she would do similar castings of hands
and stomachs for friends and families. She’s a trained
architect whose passion for art began at the age of 10 and
was further concretized through the courses she did at the
Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts. She
fervently believes that she was meant to use art to preserve
memories and lives by her business’ motto “Creativity at
work”.
