Mommy Power

Adding Beauty to Little Girls One Bow at a Time

Roxanne Baxter is a no-nonsense new mom filled with passion and love for her daughter. Like many new mothers, Roxanne wants her daughter to look and feel good. This desire, coupled with her love for fashion, inspired the creation of her business, Isabelle’s Bows. This 29-year-old woman is poised for success. I caught up with her recently to learn more about her journey.

WHY ISABELLE’S BOWS?

Isabelle was born on June 22, 2017. Her birth marked the beginning of a whole new adventure for me. She became the center of my world.

One of the most annoying things I found when dressing Isabelle was the hair bows. They would either not match her outfits well enough or fall apart easily.

Thankfully, my mother blessed me with the gift of creativity. An idea sparked. I asked myself, “Why don’t I make some bows for Isabelle?”

The rest is history. My product line has extended beyond bows. It now includes head bands, head clips, shoes and dresses. Thanks to my daughter, I’ve found my passion. I enjoy creating adorable accessories that make little girls feel good.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS IN ONE WORD, WHAT WOULD THAT WORD BE?

Girly. Everything is so girly and beautiful. I’m committed to making every little girl look and feel good.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE EXPERIENCED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR?

Exposure. I’m not famous and most of my marketing efforts are focused on my Facebook and Instagram pages. Sure, I have a few friends who’ll share my posts and promote the business, but that hasn’t been enough to make my business visible. I want my brand to be known worldwide.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE FACED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR WITH A YOUNG CHILD?

Meeting Isabelle’s demands and schedule has been a challenge. I have to wait until she’s sleeping or until her dad gets home from work to start working on projects. The projects are completed and shipped on time, but I have to work around Isabelle. She’s the boss.

YOU LOVE FASHION. DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE ICONS?

I’d say Rhianna is my style icon. I’m Jamaican so having another Caribbean girl represent us so well in both music and fashion means a lot to me. She’s unique and has her own swag. I love that!

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

Tamera Mowry is one of my greatest inspirations. She’s a great wife, mother, daughter, and sister. Her humility and virtue often leave me in awe. I aspire to be like her one day.

WHAT PHILOSOPHY DO YOU LIVE BY?

With God, all things are possible.

ARE THERE ANY BOOKS OR ONLINE RESOURCES THAT YOU’VE USED TO SUPPORT YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY?

I read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki several years ago. It has stuck with me. One of the lessons I learned is that we should move beyond our limitations. Living beyond our limitations increases our chances of success.

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN TRYING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESSES?

Don’t hold back! Go at it full force! Don’t listen to the naysayers. You can start with as little as you have. I started with $50!

Invest in your vision and idea. It may not turn over tremendously in the beginning, but if you stick with it you’ll reap the rewards. My skills have improved tremendously because I stuck with it. All you need to do is take the first step.
