White House
Reviewing Plan
for CBD and
Cannabis Research
The U.S. government
is going over a federal
plan for marijuana and
CBD research. The Food
and Drug Administration
(FDA) recently submitted
draft guidance on the
issue to the White House
Office of Management
and Budget (OMB).
While details are sparse, an FDA spokesperson noted the research
is related to the agency’s ongoing development of broader
CBD regulations that could allow for the marketing of cannabis
products as dietary supplements or food items. “We recognize
that there is substantial public interest in marketing and accessing
CBD for a variety of products… and (we) have made substantial
progress,” the FDA says in a statement. “There are many questions
to explore regarding the science, safety, effectiveness, and
quality of products containing CBD, and we need to do our due
diligence.” It is unclear whether the FDA plans to wait for this
specific guidance to be finalized and for the resulting research to
be completed before it issues final rules for CBD products.
Cannabis Exec Linton
Gets Fired Again
Bruce Linton has been
let go — again — this
time by Vireo Health,
a U.S. multi-state
cannabis company.
The Minneapolisbased
firm says it has
“elected to terminate its
employment agreement
with Bruce Linton as
executive chairman,
on an entirely withoutcause
basis, effective immediately.” Linton, who founded Canopy
Growth and was its CEO, joined Vireo in November 2019, months
after getting ousted from Canopy. “I like the company and pushed
it hard, obviously a little too hard for everyone’s enjoyment,”
Linton says after he was fired. “I’m not everyone’s favorite flavor.
If I invest and bring people’s money along, I’m a pretty demanding
guy.” Linton’s term on the company’s board was set to expire at
its July 15 Annual General Meeting of shareholders. Meanwhile,
Linton is already eyeing his next move on the global cannabis
stage, launching a Dublin-based investment fund named Oskare
Capital, which will support start-up marijuana companies.
