PERFECTING PERMACULTURE

HOW ONE NEVADA GROWER DOUBLED THEIR YIELDS

Since beginning operations about six years ago , Green Life Productions has taken a non-traditional approach to cannabis cultivation . The company ’ s indoor growth facility in Pahrump , Nevada , about an hour west of Las Vegas , was designed with permaculture principles in mind , using organic cultivation methods and no-till , living soil to produce some of the cleanest , highest-quality cannabis in the region . But after about three years , CEO Steve Cantwell began to wonder if the facility ’ s lights — LEDs with a purple-blue spectrum that were purchased in 2015 — could be stunting the company ’ s growth .

He began a series of trials , one LED brand after another . Same strain . Same cycle . One by one , the same result : none of the lights impressed the master grower , each one failing to significantly outperform the original LEDs that were installed in the grow . He eventually connected with Fohse , a Nevada-based lighting manufacturer that engineers LED fixtures specifically for cannabis cultivation . And immediately , the results were different . Finally , Cantwell was impressed .
The Fohse A3i “ started setting yield records every single time ,” he says . Having grown in the same 15,000-square-foot facility for more than five years at that point , and overcoming numerous growing pains of his signature no-till method , Cantwell found himself dealing with a completely unexpected problem : the drying room was suddenly insufficient for the amount of weight being produced with each harvest . After the initial shock wore off , Cantwell analyzed his harvest figures . GLP has been averaging 100 to 120 pounds of dried , usable cannabis per harvest under its old lights . The company is now averaging 160 to 180 pounds in each 2,400-square-foot flowering room .
“ It definitely proved the old lights were the limiting factor in the system ,” he says . “ When we got the new Fohse lights , it was a game-changer . There ’ s no denying it .” www . fohse . com 1-888-FOHSE-77 Las Vegas , Nevada
Today , the GLP facility is completely outfitted with Fohse LEDs — mostly the 1,500-watt A3i model , but also some of the company ’ s F1V fixtures . During one cycle , it reached an all-time high of 197 pounds of dried , usable cannabis — double what the facility had historically achieved !
