SOIL AMENDMENTS
Grow Green Michigan growgreenmi . com
Soil amendments are specific materials added to soil to improve its quality in terms of structure and biochemical function with the goal of providing an ideal environment for root growth and nutrient uptake . Soil amendments can improve water retention , permeability , water infiltration , drainage , aeration , structure , and bioavailability of nutrients . The presence of key organic materials is also crucial for creating and maintaining an energy source for the development of mycorrhizae and healthy microbes .
Soil amendments have varying influences on soil pH . Many inorganic fertilizers , particularly nitrogen- and sulfur-based fertilizers , have an acidifying effect . Potassium and phosphorus-based fertilizers have a neutral effect on soil pH . However , phosphoric acid , a phosphorus-based fertilizer , has an acidifying effect . Organic-based soil amendments such as manure have a high buffering capacity and therefore have a neutral or alkaline effect on soil pH .
Organic amendments include : worm castings , compost , biochar , shellfish meal , neem seed meal , guano , peat , kelp , wood chips , coir , straw , various manures , biosolids , sawdust , bone meal , and wood ash .
Inorganic amendments include : vermiculite , perlite , gypsum , azomite , diatomite ( calcified diatomaceous earth ), pea gravel , rock dust , greensand , and sand .
