Playboy Launches Cannabis Advocacy and Law Reform Initiative
Cannabis culture is getting a boost from Playboy , the iconic publishing company that ’ s never been afraid to go against the grain . In a recent announcement , Playboy launched a cannabis law reform and advocacy campaign , continuing its decades-long push for legalization , decriminalization , and destigmatization of marijuana . Initial partners include the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws ( NORML ), Last Prisoner Project , Marijuana Policy Project , and the Eaze Momentum Program . “ Since its inception , Playboy has fought for cultural progress rooted in the core values of equality , freedom of expression , and the idea that pleasure is a fundamental human right . For far too long , our nation ’ s policy toward cannabis has been backward and punitive , leading to decades of injustice … and to social stigma and shame ,” says Rachel Webber , CMO of Playboy Enterprises . Among other things , Playboy is pushing for Congress to pass the MORE Act , which would de-schedule cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act .
SunTracker Announces Improved DLI Calculator
To take advantage of better metrics , SunTracker Technologies has updated and improved its popular Daily Light Integral ( DLI ) calculator . The new and improved free online software tool merges ground weather station data with satellite data that provides monthly shortwave ( ultraviolet , visible , and nearinfrared ) incoming radiation for any geographic location . These data are converted from watts per square meter to photosynthetic photon flux density ( PPFD ) and then monthly DLI values . From its introduction 40 years ago , the Daily Light Integral ( DLI ) metric has become an important tool for determining monthly daylight availability for crops and estimating supplemental electric lighting requirements for greenhouses . DLI charts for the continental U . S . have been available for nearly two decades , but it has only been in the past year or so that DLI information for geographic locations worldwide has been made available through various online DLI calculators . SpeakEasy Reaps Largest Outdoor Cannabis Harvest
One of the biggest outdoor cannabis harvests in Canadian history — perhaps in the world — recently took place in Rock Creek , British Columbia . SpeakEasy Cannabis harvested 60 acres worth of plants , all individually potted . “ I am absolutely thrilled to have started the harvest of our outdoor grow ,” says founder Marc Geen . “ It ’ s been a long road and I ’ m happy to report the quality of the bud has exceeded all my expectations .” The Geen family has been actively farming in the Okanagan region of Canada for five generations and is also known for its significant involvement in the iconic Okanagan brand , Sun-Rype . All the harvested bud will be sold as flower , pre-rolls , and used to make extracts like oil . SpeakEasy owns 290 acres of land in Rock Creek , which is a prime growing region thanks to its long , hot summer days . The company also cultivates small-batch , high-quality craft cannabis in its 10,000-square-foot indoor facility .
Wildfires Wreak Havoc on California Cannabis Harvest
The recent record wildfires not only caused much destruction , but also blocked out sunshine on outdoor cannabis grows in California , Oregon , and Washington . Because of the intense smoke , cannabis plants are underdeveloped , meaning growers had to choose between an early harvest or regain the lost days later in October , risking freezing temperatures or snow . Jeremy Moberg , founder and CEO of CannaSol Farms in Riverside , WA ., says the wildfire smoke blocked out the sun in mid-September and put his outdoor plants about two weeks behind their usual cycle . “ The crop is definitely small ,” he says . Additionally , the smoke means an increased risk for mold in the harvested cannabis . In a normal year , around two to five percent of California ’ s marijuana crops would fail mold tests . In 2020 , some estimated it could be double that percentage as sunlight-blocking smoke weakens plants ’ resistance to mold , disease , and other pests . Even crops inside greenhouses could be affected .
