USDA Studying Impact of Hemp on Cow Milk and Meat
The U . S . Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) recently announced a $ 200,000 grant to investigate if feeding hemp to livestock leads to unacceptable concentrations of cannabinoids in food for humans . Scientists at Kansas State University ( KSU ) are conducting the studies , which will help inform policies on whether hemp can safely be used in animal feed . Little is known about the effects of cannabinoids on cattle , as most studies have focused on humans , mice , and pigs . A main reason for the new research includes concerns feeding hemp to livestock could potentially result in high concentrations of THC in meat and milk sold commercially . “ Our goal is to fill in the knowledge gaps ,” says KSU ’ s Michael Kleinhenz , who is part of the multidisciplinary team behind the studies . “ Until feedstuffs containing hemp are established as safe in animals , our data will assist producers in managing situations involving intentional or unintentional hemp exposures .” Legal hemp contains less than three percent THC .

Consumers Blast Legal Weed as “ Garbage ”
While legal cannabis companies in Canada struggle with dwindling revenues , part of the problem might be the product itself . Some company heads blame Canada ’ s recreational market , which they say has “ developed slower than anticipated .” However , the consensus on Vancouver ’ s cannabisfocused Reddit feeds is the legal market is struggling to attract buyers because its product is more expensive and lower in quality than the black-market alternative . “ The government ’ s pot is too expensive . The government doesn ’ t show you a picture of what you ’ re buying before you buy it , so you cannot be informed as a consumer . The government weed has been full of bugs , mouldy or too dry in some cases ,” one user says . “ The legal stuff is garbage ,” says another Reddit user . A third says : “ Friends don ’ t let friends smoke government weed .” Canadian government survey results released in February 2020 found 40 percent of the country ’ s marijuana consumers admit to having obtained the drug illegally since legalization .

Poland Zoo Tests CBD on Elephant
A zoo in Poland recently announced it will give CBD to an elephant in hopes of alleviating stress she ’ s experienced following the death of one of her companions . The African elephant , named Fredzia , has expressed signs of distress and depression since the elder of the herd , Erna , passed away in March 2020 . Agnieszka Czujkowska , head of the zoo ’ s rehabilitation department , says this represents an opportunity to experiment with the non-intoxicating cannabinoid . Veterinarians have already completed the first stage of the study , collecting baseline blood , saliva , and feces samples to test for the hormone cortisol , which is associated with stress . The plan is to mix CBD oil with Fredzia ’ s food and continue to monitor her cortisol levels to see if the oil really can help treat her anxiety and stress . “ This is the experiment . Then we know for sure ( if the oil ) is working or not ,” says Czujkowska , adding the study will take at least two years .
