The Messages Behind the Songs

6

The Vietnam War occured during the 60s, and many singers and song writers were putting subliminal messages about the was and how they wanted peace. Some of the songs were:

GIMME SHELTER - THE ROLLING STONES

America in 1969 had a war going in Vietnam, race riots and Charles Manson. Mick Jagger sings of needing shelter from this ‘storm’.

The song was written during the Vietnam War and so it's very much about the awareness that war is always present; it was very present in life at that point.

FORTUNATE SON -CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL

John Fogerty wrote this song about the lucky well-connected Americans who weren’t forcefully sent to the US war in Vietnam.

It was a song of defiance and blue-collar pride, both anti-Washington and against the Vietnam war.

The song spoke out against the war in Vietnam, but was supportive of the soldiers fighting there.

COME TOGETHER - THE BEATLES

This song topped the charts on October 18th, 1969 in the U.S. This song was created to campaign for Timothy Leary, a previous physiologist studying the effects of psilocybin and LSD, as California governor. Leary's slogan was, "Come together, join the party." John lLennon, the writer of the song, was a fanatic about Leary's work and agreed to write the song.
