SUBARU BOXER® Engine
Few cars drive with the self-assured confidence of the Outback, so you won’t be surprised
by how uniquely it is accomplished. The horizontally opposed configuration of the SUBARU
BOXER® engine places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than other
engine types. This gives the engine, and therefore the overall vehicle, a lower centre of
gravity and a better sense of balance. Further, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently
counteract each other, helping to naturally reduce vibration.

Not only is it the largest, most refined SUBARU BOXER® engine
available, but the 3.6-litre engine also offers smooth power delivery,
a quiet ride, low emissions and commendable fuel economy. Light,
compact and perfectly balanced by design, it features the Dual Active
Valve Control System for impressive torque when you need to pass
another car or start from a stop at a red light or stop sign. To further
reduce noise, vibration, fuel consumption and emissions, we also
designed this engine with lower friction and more rigidity.
Already naturally smooth and strong, we improved the Outback’s
2.5-litre DOHC engine to make it more powerful and fuel efficient.
We also made specific refinements to improve its mid- to low-range
torque so you’ll have more power when you need it from a complete
stop. You’ll also find that it’s more responsive around town and more
satisfying on the highway, thanks to a remarkable 174 lb-ft of torque
at a lower 4000 rpm. When combined with the Lineartronic® CVT, it’s
more fuel efficient and clean-running, making it kinder to your wallet
and the environment.
