LETTER & EMAIL WRITING Always spell out a number that begins a sentence; rearranging the word order is preferred: Nine hundred and eighty-three students graduated last year. PREFERRED: Last year, 983 students graduated. Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) should be spelled out: He was the first person in his family to graduate college.
