Merchants

Merchants are the most apparent ecosystem partners for the mobile money system. They can use the service to provide an additional mode of payment to customers, thereby increasing convenience and the likelihood of transactions. On the operations side, they benefit from the cashless payment through reliable documentation of sales and lower levels of physical cash, which must be stored and deposited at the bank.

Employers

Employers, including both private companies and government agencies, can use mobile money to pay salaries to their employees. This option is particularly interesting for businesses with a large share of employees without conventional bank accounts. While today, those businesses must rely on the physical handouts of cash, mobile money offers a much more efficient option. Through so-called mass-disbursements, a multitude of payments can be processed in one go and at the push of a button.

For telcos, mass-disbursements are a powerful way to boost the growth of their mobile money system, as it constitutes a significant inflow of funds into the system. The more funds people hold in mobile money accounts, the more likely they are to use them for other mobile money transactions.

Government agencies

For government agencies, mobile money offers a host of benefits. They can deploy the system to digitize their processes when it comes to the collection of payments. In many developing countries, corruption among government officials is common. A problem that typically increases with the number of times that physical cash changes hands. By gradually phasing out cash payments and moving to mobile money instead, governments can drastically increase transparency and create a clear audit trail that is likely to reign in corruption.
