“ The Scent of Danger” by Maddie Witt
The moons glow shined through the window, casting a faint light upon my face. It was an eerie night, and a mysterious feeling had taken over my senses. This spine chilling sense of being watched had kept me awake all through the night. The pitter patter of the rain made a comforting sleeping melody, and Big Ma’ s snores gave me a slight feeling of security. In the inside, though, I still knew something was wrong. Only seconds later, a loud bang came from the window which startled me. I quickly whipped my head to the right to see what had produced the noise. Outside, a flash of white passed the window, causing me to let out a shriek.! Big Ma flinched, and there was a pause in her snoring, but seconds later she continued her nights rest. I burrowed under my blanket, pulling the patched quilt over my head, hoping for morning to come.! With my body soaked in sweat, I peaked my head from under the blankets being met by morning’ s light. Immediately, I hopped from bed, and I ran outside. Mama was in the kitchen, but by the time she turned her head, I had slipped on my shoes and was out the back door. All night I had been asking myself what had been outside? Now, it was my time to play detective.! I circled around the house, and oddly, there were footprints everywhere. On all sides of our house, boot marks had been pressed into last night’ s mud, and were now drying up in the boiling sun.! By my bedroom window, the prints had taken a different course. They had headed into the field. Wondering who’ s they were and where they went, I followed them. After a long trek through the fields, I finally came across an odd object. A triangular, white hat lay in the dirt. Confused, I picked it up and observed its unique, hooded, pointed shape. Not able to explain it to myself, I pulled it tight against my body and ran homewards.
