Contest Winners

The following section contains winners from The Daughter’ s of the American Revolution( DAR) Essay Contest, as well as the Manningham Poetry Contest, offered to both 7 th and 8 th grade students at Wilmette Junior High.
The DAR Essay Contest was focused on“ Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence.” Students wrote essays from 600 – 1,000 words describing the accomplishments of an unsung hero during the American Revolution. Forty seventh-grade students wrote essays and ninety-two eighth-grade students participated. The DAR awarded three seventh grade students and three eighth grade students as the winners of the contest. Below, you will read just a few of those outstanding essays.
The Manningham Poetry Contest was open to all Illinois students in grades 6-8( Junior Division). This year, nine Illinois middle schools participated in the contest. The top ten poets in the 6th-8th grades receive a certificate and cash prize, and their names are listed on the Poetry Society’ s website. The winning poems from Illinois are also entered in the national contest. Below, you will read those 7 th and 8 th grade students who won or were mentioned in the contest. Enjoy!
