Helping students to communicate
Some students may not have had any experience writing emails in an official capacity and will need guidance to ensure they build their skills and confidence.
Here are some recommendations to help students develop their written communcation skills:
+ Establish clear expectations around email etiquette, and model this yourself. Use a ‘lead by example’ approach.
Email tips to give students:
+ Add an accurate description of the email, including whether it is a request, in the subject line.
+ Use a greeting and a sign off.
+ In the body of the email, be specific and accurate in your choice of words and sentences.
+ Be clear about what it is that you need, or are requesting.
+ Do not include excessive amounts of information. Aim to be concise.
+ Check that you have spelled the names of people and places correctly.
= Be respectful and polite. If you are making a request, use ‘Please’. If you are responding to someone who has done something for you, use ‘Thank you’.
